about
Echo’s Sepulchre, was composed and performed by Ivan Goff on the flute in New York, 2007. Mr. Goff composed this flute solo for Hunger Song: A Lament / Amhrán an Ocrais: Caoineadh. The title is a reference to the silencing effect of the famine; to open memories of this experience is to release echoes of lost voices.
Caoineadh Dhiarmada mhic Eoghain Mhic Cárthaigh (The Keen for Diarmuid the Son of Eugene MacCarthy), sung by Áine Uí Chuill at her family farm in Cill na Marta, Cork, June 2007. This lament was composed by Eoghain Mhic Cárthaigh’s mother after his death in Cork in 1860. It is an example of the keening form, and also exists as an important Irish poem. The birds you hear in the recording accompanied Áine’s performance on that summer evening.
