about
This recording was made on the last day of classes before summer in june, 2007 at the Ard National School in Carna, County Galway, part of the Ghaeltacht. All classes are conducted in irish, and all students speak fluent irish. local musician and scholar of the seán nos tradition, Micheál ó cuaig, brought me to the school to record a group of students performing an old tale about the hero Fhinn Mhic Cumhaill, which He had adapted into a scéaldráma, or story theater The scéaldráma tells how Mhic Cumhaill is aided in a daring quest by a grabaire, or imp.
Grabaire Beeag Fhinn Mhic Cumhaill, a scéaldráma, or story theater, adapted by Micheál Ó Cuaig and performed by students at the Ard National School in Carna, County Galway, June 2007. This is a story about the hero Fhinn Mhic Cumhaill, in which he is aided on a daring quest by a Grabaire, or imp. The student performers are: Aisling Ní Chaonaigh, Seosamh Ó Cuirrín, Rónán Ó Flaherty, and Seosamh Ó Guairin. Grabaire means ‘imp’ and this is the story of a grabaire helping the traditional hero, Fhinn Mhic Cumhaill in one of his struggles. The children’s voices, performing this old story, call out over time to manifest the vibrant joy and innovation that exists in childhood, even when it is threatened by hunger.
Echo’s Sepulchre, excerpts from Ivan Goff’s flute solo accompany the children’s voices.
