about

This piece combines two performative elements, one a sceáldráma from Ireland, and the other a song from southern Sudan, into a call-and-response between two complex cultural manifestations. The sceáldráma is a rare instance of traditional Irish storytelling taking a contemporary performative form: it is both an attempt to reinvigorate a lost art and struggling language, and to delight an audience with a good story. Scéaldráma are dramatized stories, performed in the exact words of the original storyteller, with each character narrating his or her own actions in the third and first person. This performative act reaches back to a tradition that was once vibrantly alive and has struggled to survive since the severe deprivation of the famine.

Saibhreas Dhéamuir, a sceáldráma, or story theatre, is performed by An Comhlachas Náisiúnta Drámaíochta, a Limerick-based theatre company devoted to producing Irish-language work in traditional forms. This is the story of a rich man named Dhéamuir and a poor tailor, which follows the wise tailor as he teaches the rich man about the nature of true wealth. It was told by Seaghan Ó Cearbhaill in 1908 and transcribed by Micheál Ó Loingsigh. Directed by Seán Ó Morónaigh, Saibhreas Dhéamuir is performed by Dónal Ó Liatháinfrom Cúil Aodha (An Táilliúr) and Seán Ó Muimhrneacháin (Dhéamuir) of Cill na Marta, and was recorded July, 2007, in County Cork.

Sudan Song, sung by Peter Domic Awolich in Sudan, December 2006, and recorded by Natasha Ivins.
